Transponder chips and immobilisers

The transponder chip was introduced in the early 1990's due to the amount of car theft. First of all manufacturers didn't see the need for the immo (immobiliser). They had strenghtened the locks from the old poorly made 2 wafer locks. But unfortunately this didn't make any difference to the car thieves as they would use the infamous black cap. Then Ford introduced their own system (PATS) a system they still use today but more complex. This meant that without a programmed transponder chip in the vehicle, it would never start. Genius.
